Performance testing

Web site performance can be judged on various criteria, but ultimately, the mark of approval will come from your visitors.

If your site is not up to scratch, if it's slow to load or inaccessible, levels of abandonment will soar.

That's why we constantly evaluate the performance of your site, in every possible sense.

Server speed. Accessibility. Link checking. Code validation. And if you have industry specific regulating bodies, compliance. We check it all to make sure your site consistently makes the grade, and pushes the boundaries of performance.

We know you won't settle for second best, and neither will we.

Web site MOT 1.1 (Multi operational testing)

Understanding your web site’s pros and cons is key to unlocking its potential, and can give you a competitive edge whatever your field. That’s why we’re delighted to announce the launch of a brand new service for companies with existing web sites - the AlphaQuad MOT.

Our web site MOT is a service that we offer to companies with an existing web site presence. It can either form the initial stages of a new web development and marketing plan or it can simply serve as a standalone report for companies who want an independent assessment of their web site.

It is also possible for us to prepare a Competitor Analysis report, assessing your competitor’s web site and comparing it to your own.

Our bespoke MOT assessment is designed to test your web site against 4 key web production areas. Once the assessment has taken place, you will receive a detailed, personalised report - soon followed by a meeting to discuss the results and their implications

The MOT criteria

Below is a brief description of each area of assessment, with examples of the types of questions we will be asking of your site. We realise that each company, site and sector has their own specific assessment needs - rest assured every AlphaQuad web site MOT is carefully tailored to the client in question.

1. Design

First impressions count double – even in the Internet world. A web site which is not visually effective may lose your visitors interest, even before they’ve focussed on your message.

Our design review will assess whether your web site is using its design theme to engage with your target audience. It will also assess whether your site design hinders or helps the user experience.

Is the current web site design compatible with the following major Internet Browsers?

bullet (IE6 IE7 Firefox2 Firefox3 Opera and Chrome)

bullet Will your web site display effectively at different screen resolutions?
(800 x 600 1024 x 768 1152 x 864)

bullet Is there a consistent colour scheme and brand throughout the site?

bullet Do any flash or gif loops auto repeat or auto play inappropriately?

bullet How much image movement is present?

bullet Is there a good balance between text and images, appropriate to the audience?

2. Content, accessibility and optimisation analysis

‘Content is King’. It can dictate whether your target audience will find you on search engines, and whether or not they find your information accessible and relevant.

This element of the MOT will look at whether your web site is both human and search engine friendly. It will also check for use of dubious techniques that may have been penalised by search engines. Examples of areas that we examine are:

bullet Does the site have many grammatical or spelling errors?

bullet Is the text laid out appropriately for on screen reading?

bullet Is the copy appropriate to the target audience?

bullet Are appropriate meta tags and titles in place on most pages?

bullet Is the visible content of the site optimised well for a range of phrases?

bullet Is the information on your site accessible for people with disabilities?

bullet How many external sites link back to your home page?

bullet Do you display web site terms and conditions?

3. Technical performance, functionality and securitys

It is important that your web site is performing efficiently, and success here will down to a number of factors. Clean code, adherence to web standards, server speed and load are just a few elements which need to be examined. A fuller set of examples would include:

bullet Home page download speed

bullet Custom error pages formatted and available

bullet Standards compliant code

bullet Suitable image compressio

bullet Are basic web application security measures in place?

4. Usability and navigation

It is not sufficient to simply collect your information together on a site and leave visitors to sift through it by themselves. Navigation and information architecture are vital elements of successful web sites. Among other things, our MOT will check to see that:

bullet Menus are clear and logical

bullet Any use of drop down menus are easy to use

bullet Menu systems do not prevent search engine spidering

bullet Site maps are in place

bullet Search systems are present for all site content and searches yield sensible results

bullet There are no broken external or internal links
